York U. Faculty of Education - Transitional Teaching Certificate

In August 2023, the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) approved a Transitional Certificate for students in the Bachelor of Education Program (BEd). There are eligibility requirements and required steps for teacher candidates to complete, both for the Faculty of Education and for the OCT.

• The Faculty of Education cannot advise on the completion of this process. Questions should be directed to the OCT.

Requirements from the Faculty of Education:
• Students must be in their fourth semester of the BEd program.
• Students must have completed more than 40 days of their practicum.
• Keele/Glendon/CEC students must have completed the request form for the Faculty of Education by the deadline of December 1, 2023.
• TMU and Wabaan students must have completed the request form for the Faculty of Education by the deadline of April 1, 2024.
• Students who miss the deadline will not have their applications processed.
• Students who do not receive a Transitional Certificate can wait until the completion of their Bachelor of Education program and will be able to apply for the Certificate of Qualification and Registration, which is not transitional.

Please complete the form below to request a Faculty of Education recommendation to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for a Transitional Teaching Certificate.

Bachelor of Education students should be aware of the following:
1. The OCT has indicated that “Registration requirements may change without notice.”
2. BEd students are responsible for completing their own paperwork and ensuring that their memberships are in good standing with the OCT.
3. Application alone does not guarantee that the Faculty of Education will recommend a student for the Transitional Certificate.
4. When a student obtains a Transitional Certificate, they are subject to all OCT professional standards.

I will be in my fourth semester of the BEd program in the Faculty of Education at York University in January 2024 and will also have successfully completed EDPR 3000 at that time. I will have a minimum of C+ grades in the Faculty of Education, both in courses and in overall grade-point average, and this will remain true in 2024. I will have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent for students in the Technological Education program) with a minimum of 30 credits completed for the Bachelor of Education program on or before January 2024. I will have completed more than 40 days of school-based practicum by January 2024. I understand that I can use no more than 20 days of work with a Transitional Certificate towards my Bachelor of Education degree program. I acknowledge and understand that if my application is accepted, the Board is my employer, not the Faculty of Education I have completed this request form for the Faculty of Education by the deadline of December 1.

The Faculty of Education is not responsible for updating me on changes relating to the Transitional Certificate. If my request is denied, I will wait until the successful completion of my Bachelor of Education degree in order to be eligible for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers If I have a Transitional Certificate from the Ontario College of Teachers, I am obliged to all of the College’s rights, responsibilities and disciplinary processes as an individual. I understand that the Faculty of Education is not responsible for defending me in the event that there are any complaints against me in the school. Holding a Transitional Certificate does not override the requirements for me to complete all Bachelor of Education degree requirements. I remain required to attend all classes and practicum placements days that are part of the Bachelor of Education program. I have completed the application process and all of its requirements with the Ontario College of Teachers before December 1, and have directed any questions I may have on this process to them. I am solely responsible for completing this process fully, accurately and on time and for paying any required fees. If I hold a Transitional Certificate, on practicum days I am only able to complete teaching days in the school where I am completing my practicum placement for EDPR 4000. If I hold a Transitional Certificate, on days when I do not have classes or practicum scheduled I am able to take on teaching in other schools. I understand that these days will not count towards my practicum or degree requirements.
