BEd Application ~ Waaban Indigenous Teacher Education, Faculty of Education, York University

Applicants interested in York University’s, Faculty of Education, Indigenous Teacher Education program and match the following criteria may apply to the program.

Application deadline:
Early Acceptance deadline - Apply by December 1, 2022 and submit the supplementary form, references and transcript(s) by December 15, 2022.

Final deadline - January 15, 2023
Applicants are encouraged to apply sooner as the deadline to submit the supporting documents (Next Steps ) for Admission review is January 20, 2023.

Indigenous Applicants - First Nation (Status or Non-Status), Métis or Inuit

o Indigenous applicants with a university degree may apply to become a qualified teacher in the province of Ontario in the Primary-Junior or Junior-Intermediate divisions.
o Indigenous applicants with a secondary school diploma only (i.e., without a university degree) can apply to become a qualified Primary-Junior teacher in the province of Ontario.
o Please note Indigenous candidates without a degree will be required to present proof of Indigenous ancestry to the Ontario College of Teachers when applying for teaching certification upon program completion.

Non-Indigenous Applicants

o Non-Indigenous applicants must have demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous peoples’ languages, histories, cultures, experiences, and perspectives.
o Non-Indigenous applicants must have a university degree and may apply to become a qualified teacher in the province of Ontario in the Primary-Junior or Junior-Intermediate divisions.

Primary-Junior (JK to grade 6)

Junior-Intermediate (grades 4-10)

Once your application has been processed through the Office of Student Services, Faculty Education, applicants will be sent an email on next steps. Please check your junk/ spam mail.

NEXT STEPS will be to submit the online supplementary application form which will include:

1) a personal statement (indicating why you would like to be a teacher, especially with an Indigenous education focus)

2) two letters of reference (from those who have seen you working with children, preferably in a supervisory role)

3) submission of official transcripts

Applicants are required to apply prior to final deadline.
